THE RECENT ACQUISITION OF NOKIA BY MICROSOFT
The recent acquisition of Nokia’s Devices and Services
Business by Microsoft has become a much talked about move in the industry. As
per the transaction, Microsoft will also licence Nokia’s patents, and licence
and use Nokia’s mapping services. The move unites Windows Phone 8 with its
biggest hardware supporter, giving the company the integrated mobile offering
it's been looking for with Surface and other devices. But along with the acquisition, comes one of
the most real-time challenges that Microsoft is likely to face as it seeks to
integrate Nokia’s mobile phone division. It has been seen over the years that
most mergers and acquisitions tend to destroy rather than create value.
Integrating cultures after an acquisition often proves to be difficult. It is
quite likely that the management at Microsoft overlooked the significant risks
associated with the acquisition, in terms of retaining talent and human capital
that were crucial to the success and development of Nokia. There are already
reports of discomfort among employees at Nokia following the acquisition with
regard to their employment security, in view of the streams of layoffs in the
recent years. Loss of critical talent will also lead to the loss of the company’s
innovative edge. At this juncture, it is
